Sockeye Salmon

Sockeye salmon undertake one of the world’s most remarkable migrations. Born in the cold, clear rivers and lakes of the North Pacific, they spend their first one to three years in freshwater before swimming hundreds or even thousands of miles to the North Pacific Ocean. There they spend two to four years growing rapidly on a rich diet of plankton, krill, and small fish. Guided by a sense of smell and the Earth’s magnetic field, they eventually return to the very stream where they were born. Unlike many salmon species, sockeye depend on lakes and ponds for part of their early life, making healthy freshwater ecosystems essential to their survival. As spawning season approaches, sockeye undergo one of nature’s most dramatic transformations. The brilliant silver fish that have spent years at sea turn vivid crimson (a result of their diet of krill and crustaceans) while their heads become olive green. Males develop hooked jaws and pronounced humps as they compete for mates. Once they re-enter freshwater, sockeye stop feeding and rely entirely on stored energy to fuel their final journey, which may take days or weeks depending on the river. After spawning, nearly all sockeye die, returning vital marine nutrients to rivers, forests, birds, bears, and countless other species. In death, they nourish the very ecosystem that will sustain the next generation, making them one of nature’s great engines of renewal.
Why Bristol Bay Matters

Bristol Bay is one of the last great intact salmon ecosystems on Earth. Fed by thousands of miles of cold, clear rivers and countless lakes, its vast watershed provides the ideal conditions for wild sockeye salmon to thrive. Every summer, more than 60 million salmon return here from the Pacific Ocean, making this the largest wild sockeye salmon run in the world. For more than 10,000 years, the people of Bristol Bay have lived alongside these migrations.
